pdf Experience in applying a probabilistic approach to the estimation of localized petroleum resources of poorly studied sedimentary basins
Application of the probabilistic method to the estimation of localized petroleum resources of the Prikamchatka-Pacific sedimentary basin of the East Kamchatka promising petroleum area is demonstrated. The advantages of this approach are shown and recommendations for its application are given. The estimation of localized petroleum resources by the Monte Carlo method is carried out, the results obtained are compared with the results of deterministic estimation.

pdf Hydrocarbon potential of the Arctic shelf sector of the north Timan-Pechorа petroleum province on the results of regional researches
In order to assess one of the most important directions of the development of the mineral resource base of hydrocarbons in Russia, an analysis of the hydrocarbon potential of the Arctic seas - the Barents and Kara Sea, as well as the zone of their junction with the shelf extension of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province (Pechora Sea) is carried out. The refinement of the assessment of the Pechora Sea potential is associated with the completed series of regional seismic surveys and the conduct of integrated basin modeling based on them. A conceptual framework has been developed for predicting foci of oil and gas formation and migration directions for the northern part of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province, where the possibilities for the propagation of hydrocarbon accumulation zones within the main oil and gas complexes have been identified, which made it possible to differentiate sections of the unallocated subsoil background in terms of prospectivity. The priority areas and objects of geological exploration are identified, located within the potential zones of oil and gas accumulation. An important aspect is the assessment of the prospects of not only positive structural areas (megahights and shafts), but also structurally weakly expressed areas (monoclines and synclines).

pdf Petroleum resource assets of Turkey: promt state, prospects for new development and new researching project
The state of the fuel and energy level of the rapidly developing economy of Turkey is considered. Against the background of low explored potential - in terms of oil reserves, the country occupies only 52nd place in the world, and in terms of gas reserves – 91nd place, initiatives to develop prospection and exploration of petroleum in areas of complicated geological structures and in deep-water zones, and as unconventional new resources (shale gas). The prospects of petroleum bearing areas and the development of Turkey hydrocarbon potential are estimated.
Taking into account the needs of Turkey, it took the first position among the countries of the Middle and Middle East in the import of hydrocarbons. The analysis of the petroleum exploration state indicates the only possible development path - increasing the strategic role of Turkey in the international oil and gas transit market at the junction area between Asia and Europe.

pdf  The long term development of the Russian oil resources
Under current condition of active oil reserves’ (ready to be produced) reduction in the developing fields of conventional production areas the Arctic shelf projects and in the projects of hard-to-recover reserves can be considered as priority on the long term among the five areas of the hydrocarbon estimated resources. Both areas are characterized by highly developed technological infrastructure and promote the development of related industries. Hydrocarbon potential of the Arctic shelf is of high strategic importance for Russia. Its huge potential is confirmed by the presence of giant and large discoveries in the Barents and Kara Seas. Oil and gas potential of unconventional sources in Russia has not been fully evaluated yet, but it exceeds the volume of currently developing hydrocarbon deposits. Conclusions about the need to regulate exploration on these areas and their support under the current economic conditions are presented. The pace of development of the two directions will depend on scientific support, technical progress and market conditions.

During their operation research companies of oil and gas industry has accumulated a significant number of new developments, some of which can certainly be considered innovative. Depending on technologies, methods, techniques and specific information resources they must go through the process of selection, adaptation to commercial product, promotion in the market and yielding a profit from its sale. Most organizations, whose main activity is scientific research, is facing difficulties at the stage of commercialization due to the lack of experience in this kind of work and the lack of specialized departments. Some experience in creation of criteria for classification of development for innovative and potentially commercially activity has been developed in VNIGRI; this experience may be applied in other organizations of the industry after adaptation.

pdf  Approaches to evaluation of Domanik sequences of Timan-Pechora Province as unconventional hydrocarbon source

A comprehensive assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of Domanik section of the Timan-Pechora province is realized on the basis of the study of lithofacial, biocenotic composition and organic matter. Preliminary division of bitumen on epigenetic and syngenetic is substantiated to determine the parameters of generation, primary migration and preservation of Domanik hydrocarbons accumulations. After detailed studying of domanikits the differences of organic matter maturity in several katagenesis range within the thickness of few tens of meters are shown. Oil and gas potential of Domanik Formation and Vetlasyansky member is proved.

pdf  Unlicensed area of Timan-Pechora province: evaluation of investment attractiveness of local objects
On the basis of the results of geological and economic evaluation of subsoil blocks within the Timan-Pechora province the most significant determinants of commercial interest of subsoil users and perspectives of involving oil resources in the study and subsequent development are investigated, i.e. structure of the resource base from geological point of view (size and depth of occurrence of the projected objects, productivity of host deposits), the availability of transport and production infrastructure, and the level of the tax burden. The influence of some of these factors is subject to regulation. The possible ways of increasing the investment attractiveness of oil assets that can stimulate licensing process in the region are described.

pdf  Northwestern Timan-Pechora basin - new insights into petroleum potential prospects
The prospective area of hydrocarbon deposits’ studied in the northwestern part of the Timan-Pechora Basin and its offshore extension (Izhma-Pechora Syneclise, onshore and offshore parts of Malozemelsk-Kolguev Monocline) are presented. For the moment this area seems to be not very attractive for the subsoil investors and users due to a poorly developed sedimentary cover, concerning the main perspective complexes, small progress in detailed delineation of the objects prepared for drilling and not finally identification of the oil and gas source rocks. The exploration under government contracts allowed to establish a large development of the Lower-Middle Paleozoic perspective complexes and identify a buried amplitude shaft (Novoborsky). The research aimed at tracking of the Lower Paleozoic buried structures in the offshore and identifying the most promising objects, where parametric wells can be projected and located for estimation of oil and gas systems, is substantiated.

Perspective areas in Republic of Komi are as follows: Upper Devonian - Tournaisian oil and gas complex of Tsilegorsk area and southern Denisovsk Depression, in which Silurian oil and gas accumulation zones were identified. The prospects of Khoreyver Depression are associated with the Asselian-Sakmarian biostromes and bioherms. Oil and gas accumulation zones in Upper Ordovician deposits are expected in Kosyu-Rogow Depression and on the Chernyshev Ridge, where Silurian and Lower Devonian deposits are perspective too. The zones associated with large overthrust folds are related to the folded part of the Pre-Ural trough.

pdf  Contributions to the terminology of hydrocarbons bearing shale formations – unconventional sources of oil and gas
The terminology of shale formations is discussed in the article, which is substantiated by significant growth of interest of the petroleum industry to the hydrocarbon resources in the unconventional/tight reservoir. The same interest was dedicated to the hydrocarbons bearing shale deposits found under continuous improvements of shale formations development. The main goal is to unify the terminology related to different types of hydrocarbon accumulations in unconventional tight rocks - shale formations.

pdf  New insights into petroleum potential prospects of the northwestern areas of Timan-Pechora province
Regional exploration (carried out using governmental finance) is concentrated in poor-explored peripheral areas of provinces with unestimated oil and gas prospects. One of these is the north-western area of the Timan-Pechora province, covering the northern part of the Izhma-Pechora Depression and the land and offshore areas of the Malozemelsk-Kolguev monocline. Exploration companies and investors are not showing interest about these areas due to several reasons: (a) significant reduction in the thickness of sedimentary cover, including perspective areas, (b) lack of reliable assessment of the resources of local objects, and (c) oil and gas source rocks are not known in this area. Performed exploration has allowed to establish more extensive development activity of such perspective sections as the Lower-Middle Ordovician and Middle Devonian – Lower Frasnian clastic, Semiluksky-Tournaisian carbonate unit. The tectonic structure was clarified; and the buried shaft (Novoborsky), within which there is no drilled wells nowadays, was identified. The assumption is made about the possibility of tracing buried structures in the offshore area within Malozemelsk-Kolguev monocline, which requires additional exploration. The proposed research program may lead to identifying new exploration targets, onshore and offshore.

pdf  Bakken Formation: geology, development history and petroleum potential
The Upper Devonian and Lower Mississipian unconventional (continuous) oil resource – Bakken Formation, one of the most distinctive stratigraphic sequences in the Williston Basin (underlying parts of Montana, North Dakota, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) in USA and Canada is investigated. The geological and geochemical characteristics of the Bakken-Lodgepole section and its petroleum system are discussed. The development history of Bakken Formation is outlined. The production rate from tight reservoirs of Bakken Formation has increased significantly due to the implementation of new horizontal drilling technology with multy-stage formation hydraulic fracturing.

pdf  Areas of hydrocarbon accumulation as a basis for development of oil production in Russian Arctic
The areas of high concentration of hydrocarbons as the basic elements of possible and already organized centers of oil and stable condensate production are analyzed. A significant distribution of land with a high concentration and volume of hydrocarbons, along with the presence of large fields and rich oil accumulation zones are marked in the structure of these centers. A genetic connection of the areas to the accumulation areas of domanicite and offshore glinite, and to the subsequent evolution of hydrocarbon systems in continental margins is expected. The critical importance of oil production in the industrial and economic development of the Arctic is proved.

The results of analysis of geological and geophysical data, obtained during the last decades, have allowed us to develop a new tectonic model approach and substantiation of the whole structural interpretation of this area. Analysis of the results of reprocessing and interpretation of geological and geophysical data on the northern onshore area and the adjacent offshore area has permitted the drawing an unitary tectonic pattern for the whole Timan-Pechora basin- onshore and offshore.
A comparative analysis of oil-and-gas-bearing complexes with characteristics of hydrocarbons generation, migration and accumulation was carried out. Tectonic, lithological and geochemical peculiarities have provided to clarify the concept of oil-and-gas petroleum system , and to separate two new promising areas – Malozemelsk-Kolguevsk and Pre-Paykhoy-Pre-Southern-Novozemelsk.

pdf  Integrated method of oil and gas quantitative evaluation in petroleum accumulation zones
An integrated method of quantitative evaluation of hydrocarbon resources within oil and gas accumulation zones are presented according to approaches established in VNIGRI.
The method is based on the most reliable results of separate counting of hydrocarbons, emigrated from oil and gas source suites (using balance model); applying method of weakest link and kinetic models for evaluation the volume of accumulated hydrocarbons; and using the method of geological analogy when comparing reference (with identified deposits) and evaluated zones within a hydrodynamically isolated section.
Integrated method was tested in the Timan-Pechora oil and gas province for three major complexes. Significant differences, especially in phase composition, are identified for the Upper-Visean and Lower Artinskian complex, in spite of similar results for Ordovician-Lower Devonian and Domanic-Tournaisian oil and gas complexes.
The method of resource evaluation is considered to be relatively independent, and the final results can be used in decision-making.

pdf  Knots of oil and gas production of global significance in the Russian north-western offshore: prospects of development
On the basis of generalizing the available materials on the petroleum potential of World basins and analyzing their role in oil and gas production the concept of the global significance knot of oil and gas production is first introduced. In the composition of the Earth intracontinental areals and margin-continental belts of petroleum accumulation, such knots are recognized as the regions of extensive concentration of highly prospective areas. Their total initial resources average 25-30 billion t of oil or 20 trillion m3 of gas, the presence of the largest fields is necessarily. 25 such knots providing the basic world oil and gas production over a long period of time is established. Three such knots are determined in the Russia north-western offshore and adjacent onshore: the Pechora knot now in force and the potentially prospective Yamalo-Kara and Barents knots. The resource characteristics and production possibilities of these knots and the prospects of heir development are considered.

In recent years the Timan-Pechora petroleum province takes a leader position in petroleum production volumes and the pace of preparing the country oil resource base. The regional and departmental programs now in force as well as the actualized “Program of complex developing the hydrocarbon resources of the Russian North-Western region up to 2010” allowed to have a positive influence on the pace of renewing the hydrocarbon reserves of the region. On the one hand, the economic stability of companies-subsurface users performing their obligations and, on the other hand, enhancing the exploration maturity of new districts due to the scientifically substantiated pace of regional researches are favorable to reserve growth and increasing the volumes of exploration works. However, under “crisis” economic conditions there is need to create a centralized fund or use specialized assignment for maintaining the volumes and pace of exploration works.

An analysis of geological-geophysical material on the results of exploration for oil and gas in the last 40 years allowed first to present an unified (onshore and offshore) model of the structure and petroleum potential of the Malozemelsko-Kolguev oil-gas region. The structural elements of different order are justified, established and traced. They, in parallel with the oil-gas complexes unified for the whole region, served as the basis for oil-gas-geological zoning. The updated criteria of establishing the zones of petroleum accumulation, according to which control of traps is provided not only by structural elements but the peculiarities of structure of natural reservoirs, allowed to expand promising areas demanding the re-estimation of initial forecast resources. Within the limits of oil-gas-geological zoning, 10 zones of oil-gas accumulation of three types are established: multi-layered inherited, two-layered and single-layered – buried and hung. The directions of exploration in dependence of typifying the petroleum accumulation zones are justified.

The problems connected with the process of geological-economic estimation of oil-gas objects concerning to modeling the conditions of their development and directly the economic estimation of corresponding investment projects are considered. The possibility and necessity of applying the complicated methods of modeling the process of development of hydrocarbon pools for poorly studied objects are considered. The advantages and disadvantages of approaches grounded on using the hydrodynamic models and the simplified techniques of modeling are analyzed. The characteristic of existing approaches to the economic estimation of investment projects in an oil-gas branch is given. Attention focuses on the peculiarities of algorithm realization of the corresponding techniques and their disadvantages. The peculiarities of accepted decisions in the field of modeling the conditions of development of oil and gas objects and the economic estimation of investment projects in the framework of the INVESTOR program system, developed at the VNIGRI, are fully considered. The possibilities of the approaches realized in this system are illustrated by the results of geological-economic estimation on the example of one of the oil objects of the Timan-Pechora province.

The petroleum prospects of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province (TPP) in the zone of onshore and offshore junction and on its offshore continuation are justified on the basis of solving the problem of developing a unified geological-geophysical model of structure of this district. This district is considered to be the nearest reserve of growing the base of explored oil reserves in the region and Russia. Such a model allowed specifying tectonic and oil-gas-geological zoning on the offshore continuation of the TPP and also essentially specifying the quantitative estimation of oil and gas resources, particularly in the districts of their increased concentration. Three principally new directions of exploration for oil and gas are determined.

A position of oil-gas accumulation zones in an exploration process under current economic and legal conditions is determined. It is proposed to consider oil-gas accumulation zones as the more important connecting link in works being conducted by the State on the budget means and a subsurface user – on own means. Thus it will be the subject of private-state partnership determining the economic and strategic interests of the parties. Such an approach to determining and estimating the zones of oil-gas accumulation developed by the VNIGRI on the example of the Timan-Pechora oil-gas province allowed to differentiate the territory promising for oil and gas on purpose complexes for exploration and to determine districts for regional works at the expense of budget and districts for purposeful medium-term licensing.

Preparation to licensing the new prospective for oil and gas directions of exploration is carried out at the expense of regional works conducted on budget money. The efficiency of regional works must be determined by demands for licenses on corresponding objects and total exploration directions. In the northern part of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province a share of explored reserves of ultimate potential resources is less than 50%. At the same time all its central parts are licensed and they don’t provide the necessary level of renewal of hydrocarbon reserves. On the basis of generalizing geological-geophysical materials, the petroleum prospects of the Kosyu–Rogovsk and Korotaikhinsk depressions are considered; the program of exploration in their limits is proposed. Conducting seismic exploration and also drilling a stratigraphical well will allow estimating the prospects of the new important direction of exploration for oil and gas in the Timan-Pechora province already in the nearest future. It may become the object of active licensing and widening the oil and gas production base in the region

The variant of State and private capital partnership is considered as one of the efficient ways of solving this problem. The necessary share of participating the State in financing and conducting exploration at the regional and prospecting-estimation stages is discussed. A systems approach and criteria of estimating the efficiency of exploration (at the different stages) applied as for the State (subsurface owner) so for companies (subsurface users) are proposed. The recommendations and concrete propositions on making up the licensing balanced programs providing the necessary pace for oil and gas reserves' renewal in the region are given.

Developing the theory of forming and typifying the zones of accumulation and zones of oil-gas accumulation is analyzed. The principles of establishing and typifying the zones of oil-gas accumulation are justified on the example of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province. The factors influencing on forming the zones of oil-gas accumulation are analyzed. One of the most important of them is the factor of accumulation zone existence. Such an accumulation zone is a large positive structural element with natural reservoirs (at one or some levels) controlled by regional or zonal seals and connected with oil source rocks enriched in dispersed organic matter during the periods of the most intensive hydrocarbon generation. 209 zones of oil-gas accumulation (73 revealed zones and 136 prospective ones) are established within the basic oil-gas complexes of the Timan-Pechora petroleum province. Preliminary estimating the resource potential of the prospective oil-gas accumulation zones is performed. Establishing the zones of accumulation and oil-gas accumulation zones by choosing the genetically and morphologically one-type objects of searches within (mega-) oil-gas complexes and the quantitative estimation of forecast oil and gas resources of some (mega-) complexes in total allow forming the purposeful and effective programs of studying the territories promising for oil and gas

North-West region is the least developed region in the European part of Russia, despite its rather little remoteness not only from major consumers within the region but also from potential customers abroad. Identified reserves of oil and natural gas can provide both for the internal needs of the region and the implementation of major export projects. The possibility of the solution of the main task of the oil and gas complex in the north-west of Russia is being discussed – i.e. significant increase in oil production for a long-term period under "Long-term government program of subsoil studies and renewal of mineral resources of Russia on the basis of the consumption and renewal of mineral resources balance" (2005-2010 and until 2020) developed by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia. Prospects of raw materials development in the North-West region are interconnected with the solution of the following tasks: to ensure oil and gas production, consistent with the development of transport capacity, projected consumption and processing situation; to identify new oil and gas fields in the areas of undistributed fund and maintain production levels, meeting the needs of the region and transport capacity after 2020, timely and consistent involvement of new fields in the licensing; to ensure renewal of the resource basis through exploration and new oil and gas reserves development.

The characteristic of the hydrocarbon resource base has been presented (Nenets Autonomous District, Timan-Pechora petroleum province). Elaborate licensing program aimed at oil and gas extraction growth is to become the basis for extractive industry development of the region. The principles of construction and a program version developed in VNIGRI have been proposed. The implementation prospects and expected results have been evaluated. The solution of problems considered following the developed and proposed approach systematically viewed makes it possible to hope that the implementation of such a program can provide the basis for developing a Programme of oil and gas sector development of the North-West region of Russia.
