Planning and determining the efficiency of low-volume carbon dioxide injections as a step to transition to large-scale enhanced oil recovery projects | |
Modern trends associated with the complication of the extraction of residual and hard-to-recover reserves require attention to tertiary methods of enhancing oil recovery, among which the injection of carbon dioxide is effective depending on the geological and physical parameters of the reservoir (permeability, reservoir pressure and temperature, water saturation) and fluid properties (density, viscosity). The prerequisites for using carbon dioxide as a displacement agent are based on the ability of this gas to change the rheological properties of oil, which is expressed in a decrease of the reservoir fluid viscosity. Experience in using carbon dioxide to enhance oil recovery is represented by such large projects as Petra Nova and others around the world. Due to the lack of experience in such large-scale projects in Russia, it is advisable to consider small-volume injections of carbon dioxide as a preparatory stage for the transition to the implementation of long-term large-scale projects for the utilization of carbon dioxide in oil reservoirs. A methodology for predicting additional oil production through the use of small-volume injections of carbon dioxide is presented, based on the use of an IT tool. The tool is based on a unique array of data obtained from the results of hydrodynamic modeling. The models are calculated with various combinations of variable geological and physical parameters of the reservoir, fluid properties and volumes of carbon dioxide injection. Based on the information obtained, a neural network is created, trained and tested, which is capable of predicting the potential increase in oil production when injecting carbon dioxide based on the entered variable parameters. Keywords: carbon dioxide, enhanced oil recovery, neural network, hydrodynamic modeling. |
