| Visean coal-bearing strata of the northeast European part of Russia | |
| In early Visean times, on the territory of the European part of Russia there was a significant continental territory with developed river systems, lakes and swamps. Depositional environments favored the development of fluvial, lacustrine and coal-bearing sediments from the end of Tournaisian time until the end of the Early Visean. Considering the relatively connection of coal deposits with oil fields, the Visean terrigenous strata can be regarded as a coal, oil and gas bearing formation, and coals as a source of not only gas, but also liquid hydrocarbons. The study of paragenetic connections between coal and oil formation is an important geological task that can solve the problem of the formation of oil fields in some region.
