| Lithologic and petrophysical characteristics of the Valanginian-Hauterivian shelf formations of the BG group in northern Western Siberia based on new wells core data | |
| This paper presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of core studies and geophysical data from poorly researched Akh Formation in northern Western Siberia. The scrutiny included studies of the reservoir properties of rocks, grain size analysis, and mineral composition of rocks and clays, thin-sections, and a sedimentological description. A conceptual diagram of the formation of sandy-silty strata in the upper part of the Akh Formation has been compiled, revealing promising level BG (Gydan) Group. A comprehensive analysis of core samples from four new exploration wells has documented a gradual transition from continental and coastal-marine settings in the eastern part of the research area to shallow-marine settings in the west. From bottom to top, deep-water rocks at the base of the Akha Formation transition to coastal-marine and coastal-continental settings. The results of thin-section and mineralogy investigations of rocks indicate the likely presence of a single provenance for the clastic material throughout the study area. Differences in grain size distribution indicate varying distances to the provenance. The dynamics of the sedimentary environment and water flow velocities clearly differentiate rocks by facies characteristics and filtration properties. The highest content of both sandy fractions and porosity and permeability values are characteristic of environments with highly dynamic aquatic environments–river channel facies and distributary delta channels. This research was conducted to clarify the prospects and directions for exploring for commercial oil and gas accumulations in Neocomian strata of the Tazov District. Keywords: Valanginian-Hauterivian strata of the level BG group, Akh Formation, core studies, lithological and petrophysical characteristics, facies features, filtration properties, Tazov District, northern Western Siberia. |
