Upper Paleozoic strata of the Kazakhstan paleocontinent and their petroleum potential
This study examines the structural architecture of the Upper Paleozoic, demonstrating that late Paleozoic geodynamic processes drove orogeny, folding, magmatism, and extensive denudation, which likely resulted in the destruction of earlier hydrocarbon accumulations. Favorable conditions for the formation and preservation of gas accumulations are restricted to the central paleocontinent, specifically within the Teniz and Chu-Sarysu depressions. By analogy with the Zaisan depression, minor hydrocarbon accumulations are predicted in the Pavlodar Irtysh region, specifically within synclinal depocenters filled with Middle Carboniferous-Lower Permian coal-bearing strata and sealed by a Triassic-Jurassic sedimentary cover.
